RALPH LAUREN – PURE TURQUOISE

Iconic American designer Ralph Lauren has not only popularized the polo shirt, but has spent the last 5 decades promoting the American lifestyle. His models are almost always dressed in impeccably-pressed crisp white shirts and sunny smiles. Perhaps one of the best perfumes to wear with those smart jeans and a clean white shirt, is Pure Turquoise – a feminine scent he introduced in 2005.

Simply put, Pure Turquoise is bottled sunshine... it is a crisp, sparkling fragrance that feels weightless and airy. Topnotes of blackcurrant blossoms, cactus flower and lily of the valley impress with their rousing floral bouquet... they sparkle and shimmer over orange blossom, lily and rose; the texture being one of crisp, clean cotton. A considered base of vanilla, amber, rum and patchouli proffer character and intricacy, although they defiantly manage to feel transparent and sheer. This scent feels ethereal and angelic.

Pure Turquoise is femininity personified... one can't but think of the doe-eyed schoolboy whose jaw drops in awe of the pretty blonde cheerleader. It is a beautiful composition, and as all-American as... well, as Ralph Lauren, of course.

ROCHAS – ROCHAS MAN

Cavities be damned! 1999 ushered in the launch of a new men's fragrance from the house of Rochas which ticked all the masculine gourmand boxes... Rochas Man is a scent that draws women in with its finger-licking ambrosial sweetness.

A unique scent for its time, Rochas Man tippy-toes the line between complexity and cookery... it's nectar-like blend of lavender, vanilla and coffee give it a syrupy, saccharine appeal right out of the bottle. An underlying vein of florals – jasmine and lily of the valley – give the fragrance a tenderness and sweetness, but brawnier, animalic facets of musk, sandalwood and ambergris keep it resolutely on the men's side of the line. There is complexity in this scent, and it is that very quality that will urge those around you to investigate further.

Rochas Man can be worn any time of the year, but is deliciously comforting in the cooler months. It projects well, and leaves a fresh, memorable glacee trail behind.

PACO RABANNE – ULTRAVIOLET MAN

Francesco 'Paco' Rabaneda Cuervo is perhaps more widely recognised as Paco Rabanne... a Spanish designer who forged his career and made a name for himself working with some of the world's most revered fashion houses. With a vast portfolio of perfumes to his credit, Paco Rabanne launched Ultraviolet Man in 1999, and its unique packaging and violet-coloured elixir succeeded in turning heads.

Presented in a bottle reminiscent of a hand-held lightsource, Ultraviolet Man embraces the “new-millennium” aesthetic... its purple liquid evocative of the unseen part of the light spectrum. It opens with a herbaceous blast of mint and coriander... these facets blaze over black pepper and ambergris to add depth and complexity. Finally, the whole composition rests on a plinth of patchouli and moss. It is a unique and uncommon composition, one perhaps best suited to a young man (or one young at heart) who enjoys something contra to the norm.

Ultraviolet Man works best any time of the year, and is suitable for daytime or nighttime wear.
