Frederic Fekkai (Designer)
Frederic Fekkai is known as the ""celebrity hair stylist."" He has styled the hair of such prominent public figures as Jessica Lange, Kim Basinger, Claudia Schiffer, Sigourney Weaver, Renee Zellweger, Debra Messing and Hillary Clinton.
Fekkai was born in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 1958. Fekkai wanted to study sculpture at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but his father wanted him to be a businessman. As a compromise, he studied law for two years before dropping out after meeting a hair stylist on a photo shoot. He was then estranged from his father for three years.
In 1979, Fekkai started training in Paris as an apprentice to Jacques Dessange. He left France in 1982, relocating to New York where he helped launch a salon. With his popularity soaring, Fekkai opened a salon at the Bergdorf Goodman department store called The Frederic Fekkai Beauty Center in 1989.
In 1995, he launched his famous line of hair care products that was later purchased by Proctor & Gamble in 2008. He partnered with Chanel in 1996 by opening a salon at the Chanel building in New York City. It occupied the top five floors and measured 12,500 square feet. Their partnership ended in 2005. In 2009, he launched a perfume called Femme Fekkai Sensuelle.
Frederic Fekkai married Elizabeth Shiell in 1998, but they divorced a year later. They had one son, Alexander. He married Shirin von Wulffen in 2006. They have one daughter, Cecilia, born in 2009.
