Guccio Gucci, born in 1881 in Florence, Italy, was the son of a Florentine leather craftsman. He acquired an appreciation for cosmopolitan culture, sophistication and aesthetics at a young age while working as an elevator operator at the Savoy Hotel in London. Upon returning to his native Florence, Gucci opened his first shop in 1921, where he crafted and sold luggage and saddlery. In 1937, Gucci relocated his shop to a larger space in Lungarno Guicciardini. Just one year later, the Gucci business opened a shop on Via Condotti in Rome. In 1951, Guccio's son, Rodolfo, opened a Gucci shop in Milan. In 1953, the same year that Guccio passed away, Rodolfo and another of Guccio's sons, Aldo, opened the first overseas Gucci shop on 58th Street Manhattan. In addition to fragrance, Gucci products include handbags and other leather goods, shoes, ready-to-wear clothing, cosmetics, skin care, jewelry, and watches.
