When you think about Calvin Klein, initially you think of his clothing line – specifically his jeans and underwear lines (not to mention the famous ad with a young Brooke Shields). But Calvin Klein’s penchant for perfume was equally as cutting edge as his foray into fashion.
Calvin Klein turned the fragrance world on its head in 1989 when he introduced Eternity. The now legendary cologne was a pioneer scent for its time, even down to the streamlined design of its bottle. Eternity remains a timeless, classic scent today.
When he was a teenager, the young Klein started sketching fashion designs, specifically of women’s clothing. It turns out his passion for fashion is what got him out of the Bronx neighborhood where he grew up and into Manhattan's elite Fashion Institute of Technology, where he studied apparel design.
It was 1968 when Klein started his own clothing company. It was in a ramshackle showroom where high-end retailer Bonwit Teller quickly discovered his coats and dresses.
In the early 1970s Calvin Klein introduced his still legendary jeans, which bore his name on the back pocket and were cut tighter than any jeans of that era. From the get-go, Klein made a name for himself as a designer who pushed the envelope with provocative advertising.
A decade later, Klein took the underwear world by storm with his masculine-designed briefs for women, something no other designer had considered. Women’s briefs are hugely popular today, thanks to Klein. It was also in the 80s when Calvin Klein introduced his first cologne – Calvin for Men. A clean, simple scent, it was popular right out of the gates.
Much like his clothing designs, Calvin Klein’s fragrance line was unisex in its appeal. In 1985 he rocked the perfume world with Obsession for Women, which incorporated a musky scent, blurring the lines between the sexes. It wasn’t long after Obsession for Women slammed the market that the men’s version closely followed.
Klein loved the fragrance market so much he was spinning out scent after scent well into the 2000s: CK One, Escape, Contradiction, Truth, Eternity Rose. In fact, Eternity Rose was such a hit that Klein created Eternity Purple Orchid and Eternity Moment for his loyal followers.
There may be more evolved scents out there in 2009, but Eternity is like your favorite pair of jeans - slightly worn, but fits just right.
But isn’t that the essence of Calvin Klein?
