Designer History

Bob Mackie was born Robert Gordon Mackie on March 24, 1940 in Monterey Park, California. He attended Pasadena City College and Chouinard Art Institute. In the 1970s, then worked in film and television, including “The Carol Burnett Show.” He became well known for designing the frequently flamboyant clothes of singer and actress Cher. In 1982, he launched his first ready-to-wear collection. The line grew rapidly to include fragrances, eyewear, furs, and various fashion accessories. In the 1990s, he added a line of knitwear, eveningwear, suits, a new fragrance, men's ties, handbags, scarves, watches, jewelry, and stationery.

Bob Mackie is often referred to as “the sultan of sequins” or “the rajah of rhinestones” for his sparkling and imaginative costume designs. He has won seven Emmy Awards for his designs and has been nominated for three Academy Awards for his work on “Lady Sings the Blues,” “Funny Lady” and “Pennies From Heaven.” In his 1979 book, Dressing for Glamour, he states his belief that glamour is "a state of mind, a feeling of self-confidence." The designer’s company, Bob Mackie Ltd, is headquartered in New York City.
