Designer History

Indiana-born American design icon, Bill Blass, had fashion in his blood from the get-go. The son of a dressmaker, he is best known for timeless, artful, exquisitely tailored women’s clothing and novel texture and pattern combinations. His inclination for style began as fashion-inspired doodles in his school notebooks and got a jumpstart at age 15, when he began sewing and selling evening gowns for a mere $25 a pop to a New York manufacturer. By age 17 he moved to NYC to officially study fashion. Blass entered the military in the early 40’s and was dispensed to a troupe of other artists with an unusually creative, Marco-Polo type fighting mission: to fool the German Army into believing the Allies were positioned in faux locations. After his discharge, his style career began in earnest in 1946 and held strong for the many decades to come in both men’s and women’s wear. In 1970 he bought-out Maurice Rentner Ltd., where he had labored for many years, and renamed it Bill Blass Limited. The next 30 years are design history as Blass expanded his brand beyond the basics to include swimwear, furs, luggage, perfume and chocolate. By the turn of this century, his namesake company was raking in up to $700 million a year. He accrued countless honors over the span of his impressive career, notably seven Coty Awards, Mademoiselle’s Design for Living award at the tender age of 18, and the Fashion Institute of Technology's 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1999 Bill retired and sold Bill Blass Limited for a hefty $50 million to Michael Groveman and Harest Tharani. Michael Vollbracht has been the house’s head designer ever since. He was soon thereafter diagnosed with multiples forms of cancer, which ultimately caused his death three years later. The company is now owned by NexCen Brands which continues to manufacture and sell Blass’ classic fragrances and designs, as well as contemporary apparel, and home furnishings and accessories.
