Private label shopping – I’m feeling the pinch

So, I have decided to switch gears and check out private label brands. They are everywhere -- from store-brand coffee to exclusive lines of clothing. I am pleased to report that since I started I have been finding private labels to be both practical and economical.

Let’s take my refrigerator, for instance. My kids love bagels with cream cheese. My local supermarket had their brand of cream cheese available for $1 less than the leading national brand this week. Guess what? My kids didn’t know the difference. (bingo, mom just saved a buck!) Next it’s the cereal. A little harder to fool the kids with but that’s why they make great plastic containers – who needs the box anyway!

Now let’s head to my closet. I am not label-conscious (nor is the rest of my family) so it’s easy enough for me to disregard designer brands and opt for something that looks good on and feels good in my pocket. I recently read that Macy's derives 35 percent of its annual sales from its private-label goods and exclusive designer items by celebrities such as Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger. Do I really need the UGGs?

Consumer Reports magazine consistently rates many store brands at least as good as the national brands. In many cases, they are manufactured by the same companies that make name brands. So, if you are like me and you are feeling the squeeze, why not try Private Labelling?
