Hip-hop artist and singer Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in New York City. In her early career, she sang backup for other New York rappers. After being discovered on MySpace and promoted by the famous rapper Lil Wayne, she secured a recording deal and released her first album, Pink Friday, in 2010. That album, and her hit single “Super Bass,” were followed by further albums and more hits, from “Starships” and “Pound the Alarm” to “Anaconda.” She also contributes vocals to many other rappers’ singles.
While she was topping the hip-hop and pop charts, Minaj was also signed to endorse cosmetics and clothing lines. She launched her own fragrance line in 2010, through a licensing arrangement with the global beauty brand Elizabeth Arden. Her fragrances Pink Friday and Minajesty are packaged in bottles that look like tiny, waist-length statues of Minaj herself, complete with colorful hairstyles. They capture the singer’s sense of free-spirited fun, and they’re accompanied by matching scented body products.
