Masaki Matsushima (Designer)
Masaki Matsushima began his design career in fashion, founding his own label in 1992. It wasn't until 2000 that he took the plunge into fragrances, releasing his iconic "mat" line in 2001. Over the years to come, Matsushima continued to innovate on his timeless creations, further infusing traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern concepts and innovations.
Matsushima started out studying design at the prestigious Bunka Fashion College in Japan. During this time, he learned alongside well-known pioneers in design, mentoring under the famed Issey Miyake. After graduation, Matsushima debuted his first fashion collection in Paris. His clothing drew heavily from his Japanese heritage, using colors, patterns and fabrics as a starting point to introduce new concepts and design elements that incorporated a unique world view.
After nearly a decade of successful fashion lines, Matsushima moved his design house into the fragrance world. His debut fragrances, mat; pink and mat; blue, focused on a clear division between men and women, highlighting scents that spoke to the uniqueness of each gender.
Since that first outing, Matsushima has expanded the "mat" line to include more scents that further explore the variations between common conceptions of male and female fragrances. Scents in the line include 2003's mat; le rouge and 2004's mat; very male. In 2005, Matsushima also launched a new line of unisex fragrance known as M by Masaki Matsushima. All of his lines feature distinct bottle designs that relay the overall tone and focus on the fragrance.
