When you think of gold and Jay Z, the rapper's hit records or his wealth might be what first comes to mind. Perhaps that's the association that the hip-hop mogul's signature fragrance, Gold Jay Z, is meant to evoke: one of hard-earned luxury and wealth with more than a hint of hip-hop swagger.
Born Shawn Carter, Jay Z was raised by a single-mother in Brooklyn. He started his rap career in 1995, selling his CDs out of his car. Over the next two decades, Jay Z achieved great success in both music and business. By 2016, his creative endeavors and varied entrepreneurial ventures had earned him an estimated net worth of over half a billion dollars. Today, he is almost as well known for his fashion sense and business acumen as he is for his music.
Jay Z launched Gold Jay Z in November 2013 in partnership with Parlux Fragrances and Barneys New York. The fragrance, which was formulated in collaboration with the perfumer Ilias Ermenidis, comes in a white bottle topped with a gold cap. Words like "Pride," "Courage," and "Strength" encircle the cap in raised lettering. These themes are reflected in the fragrance's rich, earthy undertones.
All proceeds from Barneys' sales of the fragrance were donated to the Shawn Carter Foundation, an organization founded by Jay Z and his mother in 2003 to help struggling students from lower-income backgrounds attend college.
