Armand Basi (Designer)
When Mercedes Basi opened her first knitwear shop in Barcelona, Spain, in the 1940s, she likely had no idea she was creating what would become a leading international fashion and fragrance label featured on catwalks around the world. The Armand Basi Design Company was founded in 1958 by Mercedes’ sons, Armand and Josep Basi, who opened the family’s first factory, producing premium knitwear garments made of top-quality Scottish yarn.
Armand Basi broke into fragrances in 1999, working with some of the world’s leading perfumers. As of 2016, the company offers more than 10 fragrances, including its original men’s cologne, Armand Basi Homme, as well as In Blue, Wild Forest and L’eau Pour Homme.
The first Armand Basi women’s perfume, Basi Femme, was introduced in 2000 as a non-assertive, peaceful fragrance that is appropriate for daily use. Other products in the women’s fragrance line include In Red and Happy In Red.
Armand Basi began selling its products in department and concession stores before opening its own independent boutiques. Known for its soft tailoring and casual wear made of jersey and jacquard knits, Armand Basi targets young, independent and active urban men and women. In 1986, the company introduced its first full ladies’ wear collection and began producing accessories, including shoes, bags, belts, watches and sunglasses.
The Armand Basi label is managed and designed by family member Juste de Nin, who is descended from the famous French writer Anais Nin.
