Born in London in 1872, Alfred Dunhill took over his father's saddlery business at the age of 21. Although horses were the primary mode of transportation, the forward-looking Alfred realized that the newly invented motorcar would soon be coming into world prominence. As a result, he changed the name of his company to Dunhill Motorities, and began replacing buggy whips and harnesses with linen dusters, goggles, and other automotive-related accessories. Dunhill promoted his lines as "Everything for the car but the motor."
